massachusetts governor, mitt romney, republican nominee. the debates are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions, via the internet and other means, but i made the final selections, and for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy, and one each on health care, the role of government, and governing. with an emphasis through out on differences, specifics, and choices. both candidates will also have two-minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. no cheers, applause, boos, hisses, among other noisy, distracting things, so we may all concentrate on what the candidates have to say. there is a noise exce

debate, and now romney has a chance to get ahead of that and sort of premessage on it, shape the debate and discussion about it, and sort of try to neutralize it a little bit for himself even before that debate happens so that when the president, if he does try to bring it up, romney can try to inoculate himself a little bit from the attacks saying, look, i have already said i was wrong. no doubt, you know, expect the obama team to say he is flip-flopping, this is something we've seen before, but now the governor, former governor, has about two weeks to sort of massage his message, and you see a real political game going on here. it's a real fight. >> yep. okay. jessica, thank you. appreciate it. >> american airlines now blaming passengers for jamming the lox that cause the seats on three flights to come loose. now, a spokeswoman says the lox, like the one shown here, got stuck after passengers "gunked them up" with spilled coffee and soda. the airline promises it won't happen again. the seats just the latest in a series of troubles for american. the company has also been dealing with l

the same thing about the debate performance from mitt romney the other night in denver, that his position seemed to be shifting a little bit. on this, on the specific comment you just played on the 47% controversy, i think what you heard last night in that interview with fox news is what mitt romney would have said in denver if the 47% controversy had come up in that first presidential debate. it didn't. it was not raised by president obama. it was not raised by the moderator jim lehrer and i think the romney campaign was surprised on that. mitt romney had an answer to go and that's the one you heard last night. as for what you're talking about on whether mitt romney is shifting his policies, the obama campaign thinks he is. listen to the president yesterday on the campaign trail. >> when i got on the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but i know it couldn't have been mitt romney. because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy and yet the fellow on the stage last

. first, here's my take. sometimes convention wisdom is right. minutes after the debate, the pundits declared mitt romney the winner. he was. he seemed engaged, forceful, punchy. obama seemed passive, detached, and glum. but what's more significant than how romney said things is what he said. romney repeatedly insisted he was not advocating a big tax cut. in fact, he declared unequivocally that he would not cut taxes at all if they added to the deficit at all. now, as "the washington post" reporter checks out, for two years romney has been campaigning on a tax cut that would cost around $5 trillion over ten years. romney said he would eliminate deductions and cut spending to pay for it. he never offers details. he did say he would cut funding for public broadcasting which was 0.01% of federal spending in 2012. medicaid was 0.13%. romney also spoke in favor of regulations including much of the dodd/frank bill and he repeatedly held up as a model his health care plan in massachusetts which has added center the individual mandate and on which obama care is based. romney's transformation

would you have for mitt romney, given the state of the election campaign right now? >> well, i think you know the debates are very important. >> crucial? >> i think so. and i think if he's gonna double down on that 47% remark, that will cause difficulties because we now know the overwhelming number of those people work and have children. the reason they don't pay federal income taxes is because the median income is as low as 1995. until the current election season, republicans and democrats supported both the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit. i doubled the earned income tax credit. it was signed under the tax credit. reagan started it. we started it with a strong support of republicans in congress. president bush dealt with that, then president obama increased the earned income tax credit for families with more than three children. this is a rejection of basically more than three decades of bipartisan policy to support working families. it's not a bunch of free loaders. there's only 4% of the total population who don't pay federal income tax and don't work and may not be
